What RenBridge was
RenBridge was the front end for the Ren protocol. Users locked a native asset such as BTC, ZEC or DOGE, and RenVM — a network of nodes that custodied the locked assets — minted a wrapped representation like renBTC on another chain. Burning the wrapped token released the original asset back on its native chain.
This let assets from non-smart-contract chains be used in DeFi. This page is an independent, historical reference; it is not affiliated with Ren and does not operate any bridge.
The wind-down (2022–2023)
Ren's development was closely tied to its main financial backer. When that backer collapsed alongside FTX in late 2022, Ren lost its funding. The original RenVM mainnet was shut down, and users were urged to bridge assets back during a defined wind-down window.
A planned successor network did not sustain the protocol, and RenBridge effectively wound down. Today the Ren protocol is deprecated and RenBridge is not operational.
renBTC & wrapped assets
Holders of renBTC and other Ren-wrapped assets were urged to redeem or bridge them back during the wind-down period. With RenVM deprecated, these legacy wrapped tokens no longer have a reliable path to redeem through Ren.
If you still hold a Ren-wrapped asset, treat it with caution: its backing and redemption depend on infrastructure that is no longer operating. Do not rely on old Ren flows to recover the underlying asset.
Why bridges carry risk
Bridges that lock an asset on one chain and mint a wrapped version on another depend on the custodian or node network that holds the locked collateral, plus the smart contracts involved. If that infrastructure stops operating or loses funding, the wrapped asset can lose its reliable backing.
Ren's wind-down shows how a bridge can become unusable even without a single dramatic hack. Treat any bridge or wrapped asset as carrying real, ongoing risk tied to the entity that maintains it.
Bridging safely elsewhere
If you need to move or wrap assets across chains, use a well-known, actively maintained service rather than a deprecated one. General good practice:
- Prefer established bridges and wrapping services with an ongoing track record.
- Confirm the exact official website; do not follow links from unknown messages.
- Check the source and destination chains and the token contract on both sides.
- Send a small test amount first, then the rest.
